1. Start with the flow
Beginner route: follow these six steps
- Check whether ChatGPT already has a subscription to avoid duplicate charges;
- Confirm that your actual location is supported and the Google Play country matches your real residence;
- Try buying on the ChatGPT website first; consider Android Google Play only if web checkout does not work;
- Add your own truthful payment method to your own Google account;
- Sign in to the correct Google and ChatGPT accounts on Android, then buy only the plan actually displayed;
- After a purchase or renewal, compare the bank record, Google Play order, and ChatGPT plan.
Check Settings → Account / Subscription in ChatGPT. If your current plan already includes Codex access, try one small task first and upgrade only if you need more usage.
What is the difference between a ChatGPT plan and Codex Credits?
This guide covers buying a ChatGPT plan through Google Play; it is not a guide to buying Codex Credits. After eligible Plus or Pro accounts exhaust included usage, Settings → Usage in Codex may offer additional Credits. Treat the current account page as the source of truth.
2. Prepare these five items
- A ChatGPT account you control long term;
- A Google account you control long term;
- An Android phone that can use Google Play;
- A Google Play country and payments profile matching your real residence;
- A payment method accepted by Google Play and the cardholder's truthful billing details.
- Your actual location is not on OpenAI's supported countries and territories list;
- You already subscribe through the web, Apple, or Google Play;
- Payment would require a fake region, fake address, shared account, or third-party “recharge” service.
3. Learn to read a payment screenshot
3.1 China Merchants Bank case: what does it prove?

This article was updated on August 6, 2026. The August 22, 2026 date in the screenshot was still in the future. The image cannot prove that the August 22 charge succeeded, and it does not prove that every CMB card works.
Remember: saving a card is not a charge, and a future renewal date is not a completed renewal.

The reusable part is simple: add a payment method to your own Google account on a computer, then sign in to the same Google account on Android and check the plans offered in the official ChatGPT app.
Three statements still need correction:
- “No US ID” means no US Apple Account is needed; regional rules still apply;
- “Card added on a computer” does not mean the final charge will succeed;
- “Buy ChatGPT directly” means only a plan actually shown to the current account.
This is one reader's case, not proof that every account will succeed.
4. Add a Google Play payment method on a computer
- Open the Google Play payment methods page;
- Sign in to the same Google account you will use on Android;
- Choose Add a payment method;
- Enter the card and cardholder's truthful billing details;
- After saving it, continue on Android instead of repeatedly adding more cards.
4.1 China Merchants Bank credit card: beginner steps
Add a card you genuinely own by following the page. When it appears, record the state as card saved, not “payment succeeded.”
Expand and check these six items before using a CMB card
- The card is valid, has sufficient available credit, and has current contact details;
- If uncertain, ask the bank about cross-border online payments, recurring billing, and security verification;
- You control the Google account, ChatGPT account, and card long term;
- The name, country, address, and postal code are truthful;
- Never give an AI or payment agent your card number, password, security code, one-time code, or recovery code;
- After the renewal date, verify the bank charge, Google Play order, and ChatGPT plan.
Google may place a temporary small authorization when verifying a payment method. It is not the ChatGPT subscription fee; follow the Google page and your bank's instructions.
4.2 Reader case: updating Google payment details worked for one account
One reader reported that the Android subscription succeeded after updating the country or address in Google Payments. The useful part of this case is the troubleshooting order—not the assumption that one US tax-free-state address is a universal answer.
Why might the same approach produce a different result for your account?

One successful checkout may depend on several conditions at once: account country, payments profile, card, current location, plan availability, and risk checks. A result screenshot alone cannot prove that changing to a tax-free-state address was the only cause.
Google's Play country guidance says that changing to a new Play country generally requires being in that country or region and adding a payment method from it. Google's payments profile guidance also says that the country or region of an existing profile cannot be edited directly; moving countries generally requires a new profile. Therefore, posts that say “change the country” may mean changing the Play country, switching profiles, or creating a new profile—not simply editing one address field. A beginner-friendly way to learn from the case is:
- Record the current Google Play country and Google Payments profile;
- Verify that Android uses the same Google account;
- Edit only the fields the page allows and that you can verify;
- Retry once from ChatGPT, then check the bank, Google Play, and ChatGPT records.

5. Verify both accounts on Android

6. Buy only a plan actually displayed
- Open the profile or settings page in ChatGPT;
- Select the visible Upgrade / Get Plus / View plans entry;
- Choose only a plan you need and are allowed to buy;
- Review the Google Play confirmation screen;
- Pay only after every item is correct.
Check only these seven items before paying
- Plan name;
- Price and currency;
- Renewal cycle;
- Google account used for payment;
- ChatGPT account receiving the plan;
- Tax and total amount;
- Next renewal date.

As of August 6, 2026, the public website may show Free, Go, Plus, and Pro tiers with different usage levels. Android may show local currency, taxes, or a different set of plans. The current checkout page for your account is the source of truth.
If the plan you want is missing, stop. Do not buy a different tier as a substitute or pay someone to “activate” it.
7. Verify three places after payment

If ChatGPT still shows Free, verify both accounts and the Google Play subscription, then sign out and return with the same sign-in method used for the purchase. Wait for synchronization; if it still does not recover, save the receipt and contact OpenAI Support. Do not immediately buy again on another platform.
8. Choose a payment route
- Best: Your own Google account and a locally compliant payment method;
- Acceptable: A trusted person transfers or reimburses the money, then you buy it yourself;
- Use caution: Someone pays directly with their own card, making renewal and refunds dependent on them;
- Not recommended: VCCs, shared accounts, “recharge” accounts, or unknown gift cards.
Regardless of who provides the funds, keep control of both accounts and never send passwords, one-time codes, recovery codes, or cookies.
9. Payment FAQ
Follow the six-step route first. Expand only the question that matches your problem.
9.1 The card was saved. Why does Android still decline it?

A saved card only means Google stored it. Check the actual location and Play country, billing details, cross-border and recurring-payment support, balance and expiry, security verification, plan availability, and temporary risk controls after repeated failures. Do not cycle through fake addresses or many cards.
9.2 Does “no US ID needed” mean there are no region restrictions?

No. It means the Android route does not require a US Apple Account. Your actual location, Google Play country, payments profile, and OpenAI-supported region must still comply.
9.3 Why can I not see Pro?

Plan visibility depends on the account, platform, region, and current rollout. Check Upgrade plan / My Plan on the ChatGPT website and buy only what is actually displayed. If Pro is missing, stop; do not buy Plus as a substitute or pay for “Pro activation.”
9.4 Can I buy again on Google Play if I already subscribed on the web or iPhone?

Do not buy again immediately. Cancel the original platform subscription and wait for the current billing period to end before moving, or two subscriptions and charges may overlap.
9.5 Can I use an Apple Gift Card on iPhone or iPad?

Do not buy a shared US Apple Account or treat a third-party gift-card seller as an Apple-authorized channel.
9.6 What should I do if my country or region is unsupported?

Stop payment and check OpenAI's supported countries and territories. This is not merely a card error: inconsistent actual location, account, payments profile, or network exit may also trigger it. Changing an address alone usually does not resolve a supported-region issue; check the account, region, and payments profile first.
9.7 Why is the subscription associated with another ChatGPT account?

A mobile subscription is associated with both the Google Play account used for payment and the ChatGPT account used during purchase. Do not buy again. Sign out and return to the original ChatGPT account with the original sign-in method. If it is still missing, save the order number and screenshot, then contact OpenAI Support.
9.8 What should I do when Android login shows “Something went wrong”?

Update Google Play Store, wait a few minutes, and reopen ChatGPT. Make sure Chrome is installed and preferably set as the default browser before retrying. If it still fails, save the full error, Android version, and ChatGPT app version for OpenAI Support. Do not switch cards or pay again.
9.9 How do I confirm that a CMB card completed the renewal?

After the renewal date, compare the real CMB charge, successful Google Play order or receipt, ChatGPT plan and new renewal date, and the account used by Codex. A saved card or future renewal date alone does not prove a completed renewal.
9.10 Someone succeeded with a US tax-free-state address. Can I learn from it?
